Clip from "Jaws"- "We're gonna need a bigger boat!"

The director used the 180 degree rule to perfection in this scene keeping everything within an 180 degree radius around the point of interest. The director also did a great job with the rule of thirds in this scene. The main character starts out in the middle third of the screen with the shark popping out of the water in the left third of the screen, then in the next shot the main character is in the right third of the screening sticking the the rule of thirds. The 30 degree rule was also used by the director in this scene every time the shot changes and camera position changes the camera is at least 30 degrees away from the previous shot. Jaws is a very famous film done by a very famous director, Steven Spielberg. I think his knowledge of the industry and art of directing as well as his artistic eyes im sure he followed these rules without even thinking about it, his experience makes things like these rules second nature.

Scene from "Almost Famous" (2000)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whuCSE6734o
The setup for this scene is that this young teenager got his first break into the rock journalism world and is having his first experience around a real time rock band. The band still water asked him to do a story on them for a well known rock magazine. The theme of this film based on this scene is didactic it shows this in the part of the scene where the teenage character goes to right something down on his notepad and the girl character grabs it from him to stop him showing his immersion into the rock and roll culture and not knowing what is going to happen next.
The virtual lines of the scene especially the part where Kate Hudson looks and the band and the teenager huddled together jumping up and down and Kate Hudson stares at them making you focus your attention on the camaraderie of the band and the newly emerged teenager. There is contrast and affinity in the overall shape of the scene with the men circled around each other and the sharp lines of the the stage and the scaffolding. The shapes of the characters faces are very triangular because almost everyone has long flowing out hair off the shoulders giving a triangular look. The space of the shot is very realistic and really gives the viewer the sense of being backstage at a big rock show. The rhythm of the scene flow nicely from them getting amped up to running out on stage and starting to play for the huge crowd. The movement of the scene is complex with movements up and down as well as side to side. The point of interest shifts many times throughout the scene because of the use of virtual lines from people looks and faces. The scene really gives off a subconscious that the character played by Kate Hudson and the teenage character are innocent teens swept up in this crazy rock world.

Blog Assignment #7
The two characters that i chose to compare are Arnold and Helga from the show Hey Arnold. First I looked at the elements of the main character in the show Arnold. The hue of Arnold is yellow-green because of his bright yellow hair contrasting with his green shirt. Arnold is a very bright character that makes him come off as someone with a bubbly and flamboyant personality which the character has in the show. The saturation of Arnold's character is very saturated pure colors real cartoon style. There really isn't a shadow in the image of Arnold it it shows him close up shot from a low angle. But there is a very apparent background with all of his friends in color and the adult figure peering over the street in black and white. I think the image really symbolizes the kids trying to over power the adult figure and conquer the neighborhood. The mood of the image is very upbeat and fun with great colors and background and the Arnold character so large. There is not much weight to the image but it does have a little bit in the background as well as on Arnold with the bending and buckling of the knees showing pressure on the joints. As for the character of Helga her hue is much more of a red-orange with the contrast of the bright pink and bright yellow hair. Similar to the Arnold character the colors of Helga and the image are very saturated. This image has a large shadow over the left side of Helga's face contrasting with the brightness of the right side of her face. The symbolism of her being the crazy stalker girl is apparent with her facial expressions and the way she looks at the picture of Arnold in a gold heart locket. The mood of this is very lovey-dovey with the hearts and pinks and purple colors in the background. The only movement in the image of helga is the contorting of her torso while gazing at the picture of arnold shows the flexibility of real humans through the pulling of the cloth on her clothes.

Karma Police-Radiohead:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2Pb9LVrCSQ
Karma Police-Easy All Stars:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGU_JJroVms
The structure as far as instrumentation is very similar as far as the use of the bass and drums to carry the song alone. The Easy All Stars version is much deeper in sound and carried a much slower tempo throughout the duration of the song. The Radiohead version incorporated the use of a piano to the lead the beat of the song as well. As far as the structure and organization of the two songs they are pretty much identical with the exact same lyrics. The emotional architecture of these songs differ in the way that the Easy All Stars version way much more happy and upbeat than that of Radiohead. Where you can see the most variation between the songs is in the balance. For the original version by radiohead there was lots of contrast between pitches during the song it it really helps show the great use of instrumentation in the song. I found that there is not a lot of panning from left speaker to right in the song. The Radiohead version has great depth and builds up to all the instruments jamming all together at the climax of the song. As for the Easy All star version the height of the song is much lower and monotone sticking to that classic reggae beat. Similar to the Radiohead there was no apparent panning from left speaker to right speaker. The build up to all the reggae instruments playing at once with a reggae groove really worked well. If i had to choose personally I like the version by the Easy All Stars much better only the on the basis that I am more into that reggae sound.
